"Salam from Jordan!!!"

Being a fellow Salsa freak and living in Jordan does have its challenges.  Up until very recently, people here had never even heard of Salsa. Having come from California, where Salsa very big and getting bigger, it was hard for me and my partner, who is my (Arab) husband, to find places to dance.  We would go to discos and watch the people "jumping around", as my husband puts it. With the arrival of Rio from England, last year, and the newopening of his Salsera Dance Studio in Amman, some of the people started to take notice.

People in this part of the world love dancing but are not really keen on trying new things. The Arabic dancing is "freestyle" and is usually done as couples. And it seems that everywhere you go, even in restaurants, you will find people dancing. The problem is that the dance floors are small and therefore, are jam packed with dancers. Also, the DJ's are reluctant to play Salsa music because besides not having any, all the dancers end up sitting it out. Recently, we have started to bring our own CD's and beg the DJ to play a few pieces for us. We have even resorted to dancing Salsa to Arabic music, which, by the way is dancable.

Lucky for us that Rio is on a mission to bring Salsa to Jordan and took the first step by inviting Edie Lewis to come to Amman to teach a workshop.  Following that, was our first ever "Salsa Night". The people were amazed by what they saw. Her dancing was dynamite and blew alot of people away!  Now, I hope they will come to the Salsera and learn the "King of the Dances"!
