Studying Moves...

Have you ever wondered how the dancing "Greats and Legends" got there?

Study, study, and more study. Practice, practice, and more practice.

They study Ballroom and Swing videos, old Fred Estaire flicks, 40's and 50's movies, all that. I see many people bring video cameras to clubs and videotape the dancers to get ideas for new moves. However, it is not good, nor recommended to "copy" a move from another dancer, verbatum. This gets on their nerves, and creates resentment. My partner and I have done that in the past, and it just didn't feel right during the performance, so we don't copy anymore.

When you're studying a move, improvise or change it in a way that is uniquely your own. Give it an extra flair, or take away something from it that you don't particularly like.

Try doing a move you saw, backwards
Try switching the move's roles - let him be the woman and she be the man
Combine the move with another to give it an illusion of being completely different
Invest in a video camera
Rent old "Dance" movies from the late 40's and 50's
