"Hey! What do you mean there's no turkey in Holland?"
"No, you don't understand -- there is turkey, but no Thanksgiving, It's an American holiday, and we don't celebrate it here"

"Well I'm a Puerto Rican from New York and I will celebrate Thanksgiving, my way!"

So I had Kentucky Fried Chicken for Thanksgiving dinner. But it was the best time for me at this first, Netherlands International Salsa Championships, which brought some of the best Instructors, competitors and judges from around the world to Rotterdam, Holland for a long Thanksgiving weekend of 77 different Salsa workshops at all levels. London, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and other countries that form the Netherlands sentrepresentatives to  compete -- all in a spirit of good will, which made this event a total  success!

What made it so very cool for me was that it was held in Holland! Home of the Van Gogh Art Museum, the Windmills, Wooden shoes and thefamous Red Light District. (Whew!)Salsa classes were held during the daytime, followed by dancing in theclub at night. We would go to "the jam and king place," where some of the workshops were held.

The workshops ranged from Beginners to Master levels. The classes were an hour each and were taught in English. The students in Holland were very friendly. The classes were fun to teach.

I couldn't help notice how beautiful women from Holland are! And how attractive were the different people in our classes and their range of skin color.

Brian and Daphne, two instructor of Holland explained to me "The reason our people are so beautiful is because of the mixing of all the different nationalities that comprise our countries culture. You have the mixing of the Dutch, Asians, Africans and Germans. " Wow! That's quite a melting pot!"

"It remind me of my own people and the beauty of our culture mixing Indians with the black and white". Holland students were great and eager to learn.  I introduced the Razz-M-Tazz style of Nuyorican dance, One, which was very amusing but different to them. Difficult at times, yet challenging.  All  open shines with style, turn patterns along with our theories were well received. Maybe because of their versatility in dance, which include Ballroom, Samba  and African dance. The ladies were really enjoying the style Addie had to  offer and needless to mention my turn combinations, for the men.    The Salsa contest was held on Saturday night at the 5-star Holiday Inn, right   in the center of the city of Rotterdam, which is 1 hour away from Amsterdam   by car or train. All the instructors were hand picked by Milton a lope, who   was the Head Instructor and Organizer of the Salsa Dancers Union in Holland   for this 1st International Salsa Festival & Championship. He selected this talented group for their teaching style, experience, and performing level.  Which, to my opinion, was on the money!

Milton's picks came from all over:
From Cuba, there was Homero Gonazales, who has taught for many years in Cuba,  and his former students, who have gone on to teach around the world. (Homero   now teaches in London, England);

From Torino, Italy, Sergio and Sonia Sampaoli, who have been the reigning champions of Italy for the last 3 years;

From Washington, Ricardo "the Wepa Man" and his beautiful partner Elba Garcia, who run the World Entertainment by Profesional Artists Production,  and who instructed and performed together along with their lovely assistant  Roseanne;

From New York, "The Salsa Diva" Adelaida (Addie) Rodriguez, whose trademark  fiery style attracts about 300 hundred students a week to her ladies' style  classes at Latin Quarter and Webster Hall and to her Saturday workshop in New  York;

And myself, Mr. Razzmtazz, a Harvest Moon Ball winner who has danced for over 25 years and now runs the heaviest Salsa teaching schedule in New York City.

The classes and competition came to an end, and all were getting ready to go  home...but for the master instructors who had taught the advanced classes,  there was still one important ritual to perform: Let's party!

Smoke filled the air in the dark club known as "The Jam." As the light show showered different colors at every angle of the club, the power of the  music drew everyone closer to the dance floor. All the instructors were   joining the Rueda (the partner passing circle dance from Cuba) started by none other then the Wepa Man himself. As the circle formed and the dancers began passing each other, I sat on the  floor, right in the middle, with my camera in my hand.

"Ricardo, what do you mean the "King Kong step?'" I laughed as I snapped  pictures of my fellow instructor doing rueda. The Wepa Man kept shouting out  commands. "Yes, the King Kong step!" Addie and Sonia glanced at each
other  and started laughing. Sergio reassured me in his heavy Italian accent, "Don't  worry, Angel, it's a new step and since you are from the black and white   picture era you don't know it because it's in color!" We all laughed --
he  had me there; when I was a champion, all we had was black and white TV.

"Hey black and white TV was cool too -- did you ever hear of The  Honeymooners?"
"No, what's that?"
"Forget about it."

We all continued dancing and shouting jokingly over the music. The "Washington rueda de casino" was looking good, with Roseanne from Washington  and Sonia the Italian female champion adding their own sexy moves. I started  to reflect on how wonderfully all the instructors had worked together at this  1st International Salsa event in Holland. At that moment, I looked up from   the floor to see Ricardo pass the Salsa Diva, Addie Rodriguez to Sergio.  I felt a warm admiration for my fellow instructors. And I began looking  forward to the next event!

This same all-star Salsa staff will be joining the Salsa Freak, Edie and young master instructor Raul Santiago, among others. At the Salsaweb convention in Toronto "What's cool for me, is that I haven't  been to Toronto yet". "See you all April 13 in Canada!"
